Sydney Dahlin Obituary

Sydney Leroy Dahlin, 87, known as Syd by those who knew him best, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2024, at Walker Methodist Levande in Cambridge, Minnesota. Born on September 14, 1936, John and Beth (Josselyn) Dahlin, in Blackhoof Township, Carlton County, Minnesota, Syd led a life marked by faith, hard work, and an unwavering spirit of generosity.

Syd's early life in Minnesota set the stage for a lifelong journey of love and accomplishment. He attended Central Elementary School and later graduated from Barnum High School in 1954. He not only excelled academically but also captured the heart of his high school sweetheart, Loretta. The pair were crowned Homecoming King and Queen, a testament to their endearing relationship. They solidified their love on September 17, 1955, with a beautiful wedding at Mahtowa Lutheran Church. After spending some time in Barnum, the couple moved to Cambridge, where they would build their life together and raise their 5 boys.

Professionally, Syd embarked on a successful career with Kraus-Anderson, starting in 1961 and retiring as a Superintendent in 1998. His exceptional skills and vision took him across the United States, contributing to the cityscape of Minneapolis. As a mentor, Syd was revered for his analytical mind and spirited approach, leaving behind a skyline of landmark buildings that stand as a testament to his remarkable talent and work ethic.

Syd's life was rich with involvement and service. He was a faithful and active member of the Cambridge Lutheran Church, participating in men's bible study and preparing and serving annual Lutefisk dinners. His commitment to his community was further demonstrated through his role on the Cambridge Hospital Building Committee.

Travel was a joy for Syd and Loretta, as they explored the world together, creating a tapestry of memories in every corner of the globe. They cherished their winters in Hawaii, embracing the warmth and beauty of the islands. Syd was also an avid outdoorsman, known for his catfish and sturgeon fishing trips on the St. Croix River. His love for the past was reflected in his collection of old cars, each one a piece of history that he lovingly maintained.

Syd's legacy is not only in the structures he helped build or the committees he served on; it's in the lives he touched. Known as a generous and kind individual, he made a positive impact on everyone he met.

While Syd was preceded in death by his beloved wife Loretta, and sons Brian and Bryce, as well as his brothers Bob and Buck Dahlin, his memory will be cherished and kept alive by his surviving sons, Brad (Karen) of Texas, Brett (Anne) of Colorado, and Barry (Penny) of Ramsey; 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren and his extended family, including numerous nieces and nephews, will continue to honor his remarkable life.

As we remember him today, we celebrate a man who was not just a builder of buildings but a builder of life, love, and lasting impressions. His impact will be felt for generations to come, as the skyline he helped shape continues to stand tall against the Minnesota sky. Syd will be dearly missed, but his legacy will endure in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
