He married Jean Hoversten on May 18, 1957. In 1961, Jean and Richard built their home where they farmed and lived for the next 64 years.

This included serving on the Long Lake Lutheran Church council, contributing 38 years on the Bradford Township Board, 28 years on the Springvale Insurance Board, and many years on the Nicholas Cemetery board. Richard strove to find common ground for the improvement of the township and made sure the cemetery was well maintained, ensuring flags were placed on veteran graves each Memorial Day. He was passionate about his family, farming, and hunting. He brought home venison almost every year, right into his 90s.Those who knew Richard were fortunate to witness a man who lived by example.
