Peter Thomas Thiry, 62, of Cambridge, MN, passed away peacefully at his home on May 12, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Pete was born to Richard and Sonja Thiry on June 28, 1963, in Rush City. He grew up on a farm outside of Isanti, Minnesota, where he had lots of space to explore and play with his brothers and sisters. Pete graduated from Cambridge High School in 1981. During his high school years, he played football, wrestled, and was involved in many activities. It was also during this time that he met his high school sweetheart, Julie Ranum, and they were married in 1983. They raised their family at their home west of Cambridge, where their sons were able to enjoy nature and explore with him.
Pete was adventurous, friendly, and an eternal optimist. He was known for his twinkling eyes and a fabulous smile that never faded. He possessed a natural warmth that drew people to him. He built a successful career as the Director of International Purchasing for Stearns, Inc. This role allowed him to travel the world, and he always returned home eager to share countless stories of his global adventures.
From a young age, Pete found his greatest happiness and peace in the outdoors. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting, and spending quiet time in nature. Whether he was on the water, sitting in a tree stand, or gathered with loved ones at the cabin, the wilderness was his sanctuary.
One of Pete’s greatest joys was introducing his sons to the outdoors and sharing countless adventures with them. He also took immense pride in watching "the guys," as he proudly called them, play sports over the years. He treasured every moment spent in the stands and the deep conversations that followed the games. For Pete, sports were never about wins or losses; they were about building character, perseverance, teamwork, and humility. He was profoundly proud of the men his sons became. He adored and loved his daughters-in-law and the love and care they've added to our family.
Above all else, Pete was a devoted family man. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Julie; his sons, Jake (Jaime) of Minnetrista, Alex (Atessa) of Loretto, and Ben (Chanel) of St. Paul; and his four adored grandchildren, Wyatt, Will, Ezra, and Eva. He is also survived by his mother, Sonja Thiry; his brother, Patrick (Julie) Thiry; his sister, Pam (Jim) Watson; his parents-in-law, Lyle and Dorothy Ranum; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Susan (Cam) Conrad; and many cherished nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard; his sister, Kim; and his brother and best friend, Tommy.
Pete had a strong faith, which he relied on, and that brought him peace and comfort. We believe he is in Heaven, pain-free, on the water, and at peace. Pete will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his unwavering optimism, and his love of life. He leaves behind a legacy of love and strength that will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
