Michael "Mick" Guetschoff Obituary

Michael ‘Mick’ Robert Guetschoff, 33, of Cambridge died unexpectedly on Sunday, October 2, 2022.

He was born May 18, 1989 in Cambridge, Minnesota to Robert and Sissy Guetschoff.  Mick grew up in Cambridge.  He was baptized and confirmed at Cambridge Lutheran Church.   He graduated from Cambridge-Isanti High School in 2007.

His first job was in the family business at GTI Cambridge Theater. Mick had an entrepreneurial spirit.  Soon after Mick joined his dad and brother at Radio Shack and True Value.  He helped the company transition to online sales, which made use of his tech skills.  Mick loved working with his family.

Mick bought his first house off of First Ave. in Cambridge, and enjoyed fixing it up. He added a hot tub in the back and hosted gatherings. He married his high-school sweetheart Megan Coyle in 2015 and they were later divorced. They went on adventures with their dog, Kona. You’d frequently hear him telling stories of how wonderful “Kone Kone” was. Mick proclaimed himself the “grill master.” You could never catch him cooking in the kitchen. He was ALWAYS on the grill. One of his favorite grilling recipes was his grandma Barb’s lime butter chicken. He loved eating Grandma Barb’s signature spaghetti and spending time with her.

Mick was nothing short of a great adventurer.  He loved so many things traveling, exploring, researching, sightseeing, grilling, fireworks, snorkeling, kayaking, snowboarding, snowmobiling, dirt biking, golfing, biking, photography, droning, riding his segway, politics, and the list goes on. He had an energy and a charisma about him that you were drawn to and couldn’t wait to hear what he had to say or become part of his adventure.  Mick believed he could do anything and was willing to try it all.  I know a few stories of Mick’s adventures during his childhood, but if you want to hear the craziest ones you will have to talk to Grant and Anita. It starts with the mud piles in the backyard, riding their golf carts, making dirt bike trails, setting of fireworks, and so many things their parents couldn’t keep up with.  Meg came in on the tail end, but she probably has a few stories of her own. Mick enjoyed golfing with everyone including participating in a golf tournament with the “Hawk Chicks” (grandma Barb and her friends).  Mick also set aside each Wednesday to golf with his mom and spend loving time. One of Mick’s last great adventures was being a pirate in the famous Tampa Bay parade. Mick was probably a pirate at heart.

Anyone who knows Mick has a story that is very difficult to believe.  You think “that couldn’t have happened” or “he has to be pulling my leg”.  He would be the only person with a dry “wet” suit in the Caribbean waters, an avalanche back pack in Minnesota, a cashmere sweater and scarf in the middle of summer, and the most expensive cream for one wrinkle.  If it was something unique Mick had it or saw it.  No matter where Mick traveled, he found the most unique sight to see or the most interesting thing you could find.  He didn’t want to see what everyone else saw, he wanted to see it all.  You had to be careful if you got in the car with Mick, you could be gone for hours.  He took Grandpa Dick and Grandma Sandy on a 3-hour sight-seeing tour in St. Croix and the island was only 28 miles long.  He and little Meg drove hours to find the purest water to drink.

Mick not only wanted to see it all, he wanted to know how it all worked, and how to do it.  He would take hours researching, reading directions, and tearing things apart.  If you wanted help on a project Mick was your guy. He was truly a master at reading directions.   He somehow had every tool you needed or knew a guy or was willing to go to any length to find it.    Even if Mick had never fixed or worked on something before, he was convinced he could do it.  Afterwards, you may find half done projects, extra parts, and definitely a trail of tools and garbage.  You always knew where Mick had been.  I referred to it as “The Mick Trail”.

I would like to thank everyone for the beautiful flowers, Mick would have loved them.  He would have known every detail about them, how to make them grow better, and most of all he would make sure they were being watered properly.  He would have built a makeshift irrigation system, so he knew they were getting watered and no one would have to take the time to water them.  Grandma Barb asked him to water her plants and hours later she discovered an irrigation system in her tomato plants.  I’m not sure where Mick got his irrigation knowledge from but I think Grant played a part in it, and maybe a little Bob.

Family. Probably the most important word to Mick. Each one of us would argue we were Mick’s favorite.  I know he would argue he was yours.  He loved playing with his nieces and nephews.  He would try and find the perfect gift.  I’m not sure what a 1-year-old would do with an electric airplane, but he knew one day the kid would love it.  He loved vacationing with family.  Anita and her family enjoyed vacationing with Mick. They went to Disney World, Wyoming, South Dakota, and anywhere Anita was willing to go.   I’m sure camping with Uncle Mick is something they will never forget. He even named a cliff on Google Maps after Maverick.  Maxine has the lake behind her house named after her on Google Maps.  I’m sure Trevor, Addi, Brody and Nash have something named after them in Google Heaven.

Micky was very endearing to people and made friends on the spot, with his infectious smile and a charismatic spirit. He was a compassionate, giving, helpful, patient, caring person with a kind soul and loving heart. His trademark was the “hang loose” sign. In Mick’s words: “Hang loose, dude. Go with the flow.” Everyone wanted to take care of him.  He could make a lifelong friend in a second, he was everyone’s goofy little brother, and had a unique relationship with everyone he met.  We never knew when we would hear from him or see him, he would just pop in.  Sometimes he would stay for minutes or sometimes he would be with you for hours, but he came to see you because he loved you. We all had the privilege of knowing Mick and being part of his life.  Now the angels in heaven will get to enjoy what we will greatly miss here on earth.  I’m sure he has already made friends with all of them.  He will be dearly missed.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jack Ott and Sandy Guetschoff.

Mick is survived by his parents Robert (Heidi) Guetschoff, Sissy (Rich Krause) Guetschoff; siblings: Grant (Lisa) Guetschoff, Anita (Bryan) Bergin, and Megan Guetschoff, nieces and nephews: Trevor and Addi Guetschoff; Maverick, Maxine, and Brody Bergin; and Nash Guetschoff; grandparents: Richard Guetschoff, Barb Guetschoff, Judy Danielson-Ott and Bruce (Marty) Danielson; former wife, Megan Coyle; aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
