Obituary

MaryAnn A. Wessel, 80, of Elk River, formerly of Cambridge passed away at home on Monday, July 24, 2023 surrounded by family.

She was born May 31, 1943 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Frederick and Pauline (Weinmann) Determan.  MaryAnn grew up in Swanville where she attended country school and graduated Salutatorian and was homecoming queen from Swanville High School in 1961.  Following high school, she moved to Minneapolis with her sister Lorraine and worked for Pillsbury and Strong Scott.

She met James Wessel before he enlisted in the Navy, they kept in touch and would marry on August 26, 1963 at the Catholic Church in Swanville.  They made their home in Northeast Minneapolis, St. Michael, Big Lake and then settled on a hobby farm west of Cambridge where they raised their four children.

MaryAnn worked at Farmers Insurance in Cambridge for several years.  She was a member of Christ The King Catholic Church. 

MaryAnn enjoyed dancing, polkas, playing cards, cooking, gardening and especially spending time with her grandchildren.  She made trips to the east and west coasts to visit her daughter.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband James Wessel in July 2003, granddaughter Allyson Doten, brothers Romaine and Kenneth Determan, sisters Lorraine Symalla, Donna Warzecha, and nieces Jennifer Symalla and Pam Beddoe.

MaryAnn is survived by her children Julie (Tom) Wood of Albertville, Maria (Barry) Smith of Elk River, Scott (Krisanne) Wessel of Cambridge, Marcia (Jon) Westover of Isanti, eight grandchildren Jacob Wessel, Silas Doten, Noah Doten, William Wessel, Ben Westover, James Smith, Jack Smith, Annastina Wessel, great granddaughter Claire Wessel, brother Gene (Jane) Determan of Moorhead, sister Ione Hoskins of Brainerd, other relatives and friends.

A Private Service will be held at Carlson-Lillemoen Funeral Home.  Interment in Christ The King Catholic Cemetery in Cambridge.
