Today, we honor the memory of Karen Marie Knudson, a bright light of love and selflessness, who passed away peacefully in her family home in Minneapolis on May 29th, 2024. Born on May 3, 1963, Karen grew up in Robbinsdale and Cambridge, MN with siblings Dave, Paul, Diane and Mark. As a student, she was very active in band, choir and sports, as well as multiple Christian student groups. In the 7th grade band, Karen, a French hornist, sat in front of Larry, a trumpeter, to whom she would eventually be married some 12 years later on May 16, 1987. Together, they raised a beautiful family, including their sons Peter and Ben, and daughters Anna Jardee (Jonathan) and Elizabeth Way (Will). Karen’s role as a mother and soul-mate to Larry was one she cherished. All her children and Larry always knew they were deeply loved.
Karen earned a Bachelor of Arts in Community Service and Early Childhood Development from Bemidji State University. Her interest and training in these areas were the foundation of her lifelong work with children including those with special needs. Additionally, she served as a birth doula. Her gentle guidance and reassuring presence to mothers during childbirth, made her an invaluable companion to many during one of life's most significant moments.
Those who knew Karen will remember her for the simple pleasures she enjoyed. Her flower garden was a work of beauty, where she found joy in the vibrant blooms and the challenge to make each year better. Walking or biking with Larry or friends were times to pursue deeper relationships and enjoy the outdoors in all nature’s seasons. Puzzles were not just a pastime for Karen, but an opportunity to bond with children, creating moments of learning and laughter. Karen thrived in the heart of her community where she was deeply loved. She cherished neighborhood get-togethers and took every opportunity to nurture the wide circle of friendships that enriched her life. She was a living example of the faith in Christ that guided her life’s course. Her kindness and empathy were a source of strength and support to many, and she was an inspiration to all who knew her. As we bid farewell to Karen, we celebrate a life beautifully lived. Her life and love will continue to live on through the stories shared, the gardens that bloom, and the love that she fostered in the hearts of her family and friends. Karen Marie Knudson will be deeply missed, but her light will never fade.
