Obituary

Joseph Mathew Haupert Sr.  of Zimmerman, MN died on Thursday August 13th , 2020 at GracePointe Crossing in Cambridge, MN at the age of 90.

Joe was born November 24th, 1929 as the second son of Lawrence M. and Hedwig Haupert, on a farm near Remsen, IA.  The family later moved to a farm near Pipestone, MN where Joe attended high school and worked with the local farmers.

In 1946, he joined the United States Air Force where he flew over 200 missions during the Berlin Airlift.  He was stationed at Rapid City Air Force Base where he flew with General Ellsworth.  During his Air Force career, he was awarded the Air Medal, the 1st Oak Leaf Cluster to the Air Medal, the German Occ Medal and the Berlin Airlift Device.

In 1951 he married MaryAnn DeVriend, and shortly after, left the Air Force to pursue civilian opportunities.  He worked as a mechanic at Albrecht Service Garage, which he later purchased.  As owner of Haupert Service Garage, he was active with many organizations.  He became president of The Garage Association, and was active with his local VFW.  Joe was hired by the Sunnen Corporation as a Field Engineer.  He excelled in the field of sales, and retired in 1992 to enjoy his home on Little Elk Lake that he dearly loved.  He loved his family, and never missed a family reunion.  His favorite activities included flying, hunting, fishing and Sunday coffee with friends.  Not to be missed events for him were the openers of deer hunting and fishing which he spent with family and friends.

He is survived by his sons David of Andover, Joseph Jr. (Deanna) of North Branch, Timothy (Jolie) of Solon, OH.  Daughters; Catherine (Gary) Kleinheksel of Zimmerman, Karen (Tom) Geist of Knoxville, TN.  11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.  Also survived by his brothers Frank (Marilyn) of Big Lake, Jim (Karen) of Starbuck, Ron (Jan) of Bayfield, WI.  Sisters; Geraldine (Daryl) Voss of Slayton, Pat Schneller of Alexandria and Shirley (Jerry) Barthel of St. Michael and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Joe was preceded in death by his ex-wife MaryAnn, parents Lawrence and Hedwig; brother Louis, Harold, and Larry; sister Rita Mae Dickey

Graveside service with honors will be at Ft Snelling National Cemetery on October 2, 2020 at 11:30 AM
