Harold Haas Obituary

Harold Heath Haas passed away unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, May 27th, 2023. His son Kevin was with him and called emergency services. Harold could not be revived. Harold will be sorely missed by his family and church communities in both Crosslake, MN and Tucson, AZ. He had no enemies; to know him was to love him.

Born in Fargo, ND on September 23rd, 1932, Harold was the second youngest of 7 siblings. He remembered growing up during the Great Depression and experiencing privation during WWII. Harold started learning a trade while still in High School. His first job was with Walker Advertising at the age of 17..

Harold married Shirley Jean Erickson (d. 2014) at Salem Evangelical Free Church on July 16th, 1955. Their family grew as they welcomed sons Kent, Kevin, and Christopher into their lives. After the tragic passing of their days-old daughter, Lori Jean (1964), they adopted daughter Deborah (1969) to complete their family. A lifelong supporter of the EFCA (Evangelical Free Church of America), Harold was a member of several EFCA churches over the years. He was present when Buffalo Bible Camp moved and re-opened as Camp Shamineau and he remained a faithful supporter of the Camp and its mission right up until his passing.

Harold held several jobs over the course of his career including many years at Saga Advertising. His last job was with Webb Publishing as the layout editor for The Farmer Magazine. Harold taught himself many of the skills he acquired over a lifetime of supporting his family and he was a natural networker, no one was a stranger after they met and talked with him. He retired in 1994 at the age of 62, after a lifetime of tithing 10% of his modest income and encouraging his children to pursue university/college degrees.

In the last 10 years of his life, Harold embarked on several adventures including a trip to the Holy Land, trips with his son Kevin, and many outings with his brother Marv (d. 2021). He visited Camp Shamineau whenever he could and marveled at how it had grown over the years. When in Minnesota he attended and volunteered at The Log Church. Every year on the anniversary of his wife’s passing, he’d hand out red roses to all the women in the congregation. And he sponsored half-day programming at the local Christian radio station (The WORD) by airing messages and songs in Shirley’s memory. In Oro Valley, AZ he was involved with the congregation of the Northwest Bible Church and the retirement community at The Highlands.

But Harold’s greatest joy in his final days was spending time with his 4 grandchildren, Alex, Madison, Micah, and Kerin Hannah. We believe he passed away at a point where he was content with his life and secure in the knowledge he’d done his job as a father and grandpa.  We will miss him greatly.

He was preceded in death by wife Shirley, his son Kent, his parents Louis & Ann, his brothers Stanley, Dean & Marvis, and his sisters Sue & Mavis. He is survived by his sister Peggy (Gary), his children Kevin (Arlin), Christopher, Deb (Rob), and his grandchildren Alex, Madison, Micah, and Kerin Hannah.
