Dehl D. Lindstrom, 94, passed away on May 17, 2025, a symbolic day for a true patriot to depart, as it was Armed Forces Day - a day our nation honors those who have served.
Dehl was born September 23, 1930, in Maple Ridge Township, MN, the son of John and Sigrid (Johnson) Lindstrom. Dehl attended Braham schools, and after graduation in 1948, he joined the Army and served in the Korean War between 1952 and 1954. He was awarded a Bronze Star with V device for Valor, and in December 2024, he was awarded a Congressional Gold Medal for his bravery and heroism.
After the Korean War, Dehl attended the University of Minnesota-St. Paul Campus for 2 years. Dehl met Janet B. Tillquist in 1957 while attending Central Baptist Church in St. Paul, MN, where they were married in 1959. They lived in Cambridge for two years and were blessed with a son, Steven and daughter, Lorie. They moved to Osceola, Wisconsin, for 5 years, and there their daughter Amy was born. In 1967, the family moved back to Cambridge to make their home where their youngest son, David, was born.
Dehl worked at Polk County Co-Op in Osceola, Wisconsin, and Midland Co-op in Cambridge, MN. He then began his career with United Power Association (Great River Energy) as a Lead Combustion Turbine Operator/Mechanic, retiring after 22 years. He also worked as a custodian at the First Baptist Church in Cambridge. Dehl volunteered on the Isanti County Safety and Rescue Squad for 29 years and during this time found another passion volunteering on the Central Minnesota Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) for 20 years. Because he could not sit still after his initial retirement, Dehl went back to work for Great River Energy part-time for another 15 years, fully retiring in 2014.
Dehl was a true family man and a forever friend, one who would be there for anyone, anytime. He truly enjoyed time with his family and becoming "Grandpa and further living the title "Great Grandpa". Dehl worshipped at First Baptist Church and New Hope Church in Cambridge. You could find Dehl enjoying fellowship and food at his favorite spot, People's Cafe, where Bob, Cindy, and staff treated him like family. You could often hear Dehl saying "isn't that something," his signature phrase that somehow fit every occasion.
Dehl is survived by his wife Janet of 66 years, son Steven, daughters Lorie (David) Spangler, and Amy (Grady) Dahl; grandchildren Patrick (Danielle) Lemieux, Erik (Jordan) Lemieux, Jesse Spangler, Jamie (Abby) Spangler, Kayla Yerigan, Briana (Jason) Ahrenholz, Darcy Dahl, Mallory (Nate) Travis, Hailey Dahl, Cody Dahl (Sam Boland); and his 12 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son David, brother John, and brother-in-law Jerry Tillquist.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at GracePointe Crossing and Ecumen North Branch for their compassionate care given to Dehl.
