Clara Newberg age 100 and 4 months passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on November 19, 2021.
Clara was born July 19, 1921 to Ole & Pauline Vier in Stavanger, Norway. Clara immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island in 1929. They moved to the Lake Superior area so that her father could work as a commercial fisherman. After realizing that the fishing was not up to Clara’s father’s standards, she and her family moved to North East Mpls where he worked as a butcher.
Clara attended Edison High School until the 10th grade, leaving early to go to Beauty School to support her family during the depression era.
She was married in the spring to 1941 to Robert Newberg. They had two boys Dennis in 1942 and Darrell in 1947. They moved several times, from S. Mpls to Columbia Hts and then finally settling back to NE Mpls in 1949.
During WWII, when her husband Robert was called to duty, she went to work at the Arden Hills Ordnance Plant until he came home.
Clara returned to the work force after Robert’s death in 1971. Working as a bookkeeper at S & M Tire in St. Anthony and later as a Respiratory Tech at HCMC until she retired at the age of 78. In 2006 she moved to Isanti to be closer to her sons and grandchildren.
Clara is survived by her sons Dennis (Connie) and Darrell (Bonnie); grandchildren; Jack Newberg, Max (Melissa) Newberg, Chad (Mary) Newberg, Benjamin (Kathy) Newberg. Great-Grandchildren; Aurora, Jesse, Kamila, Alena, Xavier, Nolan, Caleb and Evan Newberg, Amber (Adam) Turner, Kayla (Isaac) Chiles, Blake and Joshua Newberg. Great-Great-Grandchildren Elizabeth Chiles and Henry, Harrison and Clara Turner.
Also survived by her sister Olga Young and many loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Marian Knutson; brothers-in-law Jerry Young and Ted Knutson and her nephew Roger Knutson.
