Sonny Huynh Obituary

Sonny Van Huynh, 76, of Cambridge, MN., passed away on Wednesday, March 13, 2024 at home.

He was born March 6, 1948 in Saigon, Vietnam to Doanh and Dam (Huynh) Nguyen.  Sonny grew up in Saigon and was drafted into the South Vietnamese Navy at the age of 17.  He served during the Vietnam War and later escaped in the fall of Saigon to seek refuge in the United States.  In June of 1975, he came to Pennsylvania where he was baptized.  He made his way to Minnesota to the Salvation Army Camp in New Brighton.  Sonny would move to Mounds View and became a U.S. Citizen in June of 1982.  He met Wendy Burmeister and they were married August 7, 1982 at Cross of Glory Lutheran Church in Mounds View.  They had one son Tommy.  The family lived in St. Paul for a short time. Wendy passed away in 1983 when Tommy was only two years old. Sonny raised Tommy as a single parent.  They would make their home in Bloomington and Richfield.

Sonny worked for many years at Sea Gate Hard Drive Company (formerly Control Data) in Bloomington.  He went on to start his own real estate investment company which he ran until his failing health prevented him from continuing to work.

Sonny enjoyed fixing things and was always working on home improvement projects. He worked hard and took much pride in the properties he repaired. He was a very supportive father and a caring brother, making a trip back to Vietnam to find his family and bringing them to Minnesota.  Some would relocate to Texas and Massachusetts.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Wendy, brother Su Thanh Nguyen and father-in-law William Burmeister

Sonny is survived by his son Tommy (Lara) Huynh of Cambridge, grandson Thomas Huynh, siblings Manh Nguyen, Lanh Nguyen, Tot Nguyen, Nghiep Huynh, mother-in-law Ann Burmeister, as well as other relatives and friends.

A Graveside Service will be held 11AM, Saturday, March 16, 2024 at Knife Lake Cemetery near Mora with Father Peter VanderWeyst officiating.
